Basil Fitch has a long history of civic activism and he brings to it his experience as a business person and a street-savvy alderman. Upon hearing about the UTas proposed move to Inveresk and upon land gifted to the university by Launceston City Council.
He is not against the University gaining its aspiration of moving closer to Launceston's CBD. However, hi is opposed to Launceston's ratepayer subsidising the initiative and also to bearing the costs of the consequent new infrastructure requirements that the initiative will inevitably make necessary.
Basil Fitch is one of the initiators of the letter to the Prime Minister calling for a new stand alone institution of higher education and training located in the Tamar/Esk region.

THE Launceston City Council’s recent meeting to present its annual report was a complete farce.
The Thursday prior to the meeting at the Town Hall had run out of annual general meeting reports.
The meeting was scheduled to start at 5.30pm ``tea time” and many ratepayers had not even left work.
This is an old ``trick”, call meetings at meal times if you don’t want many to attend.
Only seven out of 12 alderman attended, just enough for a quorum and about six ratepayers ``what a crowd”.
The rules of meetings only allow two minutes for questions and two minutes to speak on an issue, totally inadequate.
Where has transparency gone in local government?

UTAS March 6
TREASURER Peter Gutwein has given to UTAS another $15m taking the total so far to $30m for the new Art Centre, Hunter Street, Hobart.
Together with UTAS's $60m and the federal government’s $37m, the total $127m lavish spending continues in Hobart.
Come on Mr Gutwein, where is the North’s share of what is left of the $60m you spruiked about for this project?

THE Federal and State Government fund UTAS , all three have multi million dollars budgets.
Launceston City Council (ratepayers) has a budget about $100 million.
Why should the ratepayers of Launceston subsidies (give Willis Street and old Velodrome) to UTAS for nothing.
Treasurer Peter Gutwein stated he would make available $60 million to help the move of Utas to Inveresk.
Well come on Peter, let us see your generosity.

THE ultimate amalgamation model has been used in New Zealand for 30 years.
Abolish state government and the Legislative Council, abolish 29 councils and replace with regional super councils, Northern, Southern, North-West and a few community boards.
Each council to have five or six full-time representatives with ward system and every ratepayer has representation.
Complete privatisation .
All ratepayers on flat rate increases and abolish out dated AAV model.
Yes let’s have real amalgamation and real savings about $500 dollars a year.
The current Tasmanian local government model is flawed and offers no real benefits to ratepayers in present amalgamation discussions.
